Let’s talk for a moment about Star Trek’s redshirt problem. Technically, red means you’re in a support role, like engineering or security (this is in the Original Series, mind you, it all changes after TNG). Â But because security wears the red shirt, it’s been intrinsically tied to dudes who beam down and jump in front of phaser fire for the captain. Scotty, however, wears a red shirt, and we never see him die — in fact, he lives the longest of anyone on the crew (if you count his being trapped in a transporter for 75 years). The closest you’re going to get to an engineer in the Nintendo world is a plumber. So, if you put Mario in a red shirt, that’s not game over for him. That’s an invincibility star. Give the guy some credit. He didn’t go to plumbers school for nothin’.
